Influenced by a bit of magic…
We mentioned when we closed for our rebranding and remodel back at the end of 2022 that we had come across a community of fairies that had moved into the back garden patio during the time it has been undergoing repairs. We understand this may be hard to believe, but we were not surprised at all considering the magic we know flows through these walls. These nature spirits brought our attention to the simple truth that waste is a purely human creation and does not exist in nature. They knew of our Zero Waste goal and our aim to procure local, organic ingredients and pointed out how much better we could do.
Did you know that every day, the average person unknowingly contributes to our growing landfill problem by creating about 4.4 pounds of garbage? That’s over 1600 pounds of waste per year! Unfortunately, it’s not just individuals who are responsible for this issue. Even restaurants, which we love to visit and enjoy delicious meals, create an astounding 100,000 pounds of waste annually. This not only harms our environment but also results in a staggering $160 billion worth of wasted food. We mustn’t overlook the fact that food, plastics, and paper products contribute to a significant 54% of our landfill waste. If we continue on this path, experts predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
At Zest Garden Cafe, when we know better, we do better!
Ever since reopening, we have been incredibly surprised and thrilled by the remarkable decrease in waste after only a few small changes! And guess what? Our culinary adventures have reached new heights of scrumptiousness! We have been pleasantly surprised by the wide array of basic ingredients we can effortlessly whip-up, including oat milk, oat flour, chocolate-hazelnut spread, vegan caramel, and vegetable broth just to name a few – all preventing waste through conscious purchasing while avoiding most all processed ingredients.
We are blessed to share our magic-infused space with the fairy-folk – don’t be too surprised if you see them around!
